A while ago, I told my sister, Fritz, that I thought she would have done very well and enjoyed what she learned if she attended college. I told her that until I took a class in Art History, I never knew how much I enjoyed the art of the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Unfortunately, my parents lack of understanding of a college education clouded her vision and she never went.
Yesterday, Tony and I went to Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC to see an exhibit of Rembrandt's work at the David McCune International Art Gallery. After that, we had lunch in one of our favorite Italian restaurants in downtown Fayetteville.
The exhibit, 59 etchings, was wonderful. The gallery provided magnifying glasses so you could see the detail work in the back of the paintings. I didn't realize how much Rembrandt used light and darkness in his work. Some of the etchings could arguably have been cut in half--one half light, one half dark. And, others cut into 3 equal sections--dark, light and a darker background. His attention to detail was amazing.
It was good to get out and I felt retired. Who goes to an art gallery on a Tuesday? Oh, retired people!! But, as we drove around the campus of Methodist University, that old feeling of what I missed by not attending college right out of high school resurfaced. Groups of students, all masked, headed toward the Science hall, while others sat on the grass and studied. How I wanted to turn back time and be one of them.
But, I'm not. I'm a grandmother of 8--soon to be 9. David, Brenda and Alex are pregnant. Alex is looking forward to being a big sister and enjoys announcing that there is a baby in "Mommy's stomach." The baby is due March 28. Of course, if this baby is anything like Alex was, we can expect him or her in May!! Alex was SO overdue!
And so, that's about it for us. The Palm Pointe Social is this Saturday and we will be going to Charlotte soon. All of a sudden it will be time for Donna and Bob to be down for the season. Can't wait.
