I met a young girl new to this country last night. We talked through her mother and I welcomed her to our country. During the conversation, I asked what she wanted to be later in life. She hesitated and I suggested, "Doctor?" When her mother translated that, the girl smiled and said, (in Spanish,) "maybe." I suggested, "Nurse?" and she smiled again.
She said something to her mother, who translated to me. "She said, she wants to do what you do."
That surprised me. Really? I asked. Why is that?
Her mother translated the question and the girl replied, "Usted hace sonreir a la gente."
What did she say, I asked?
Her mother said, "you make people smile."
And so did she.
Gracias, mi pequeno amor.
